FELINE PORTRAIT RELIEFS

Portraiture, with another dimension.

Cats have always seemed particularly suited to portraiture. Their markings are distinctive, their expressions extraordinarily specific, and their personalities tend to occupy considerably more space than their bodies.

Judith Austen’s feline portrait reliefs translate those familiar characteristics into singular, hand-painted works of art.

Each begins with a hand-formed bas-relief sculpture created by an artisan collaborator. Judith then works from photographs and stories supplied by the cat’s person, interpreting its markings, expression, color and character in paint.

No two are alike.

MORE THAN A LIKENESS

The familiar, translated by hand.

Judith does not simply reproduce a photograph. She studies the details that make one cat unmistakably itself: a particular expression, the shape of a marking, the color of an eye, the set of the ears, the attitude.

Those characteristics are interpreted in paint across the handmade relief form.

The result is deliberately painterly, a little eccentric, and entirely individual.
