Painting is a form of meditation. What I paint can be as mundane as a still life of a half-eaten breakfast, to a vast panorama of the Atlantic Ocean from a porch. I always work directly from life, on location, in situ, and never from photographs.
When on location, be it in front of a peeled orange or a low tide seascape, I am in the moment, the present tense. That moment is in constant change, and as I become a part of that movement I become one with the sky, the water, the ceramic plate the orange peel rests on.
Getting myself "out there" to paint is always a risk. I never know what will emerge and often when I look at the results a day later, I wonder if it was possible-- did the sky really do that? Was the grass truly so chartreuse? The moment -- as I saw and felt it -- is what I am after, so surprised as I may be by the final image, I am so glad I took the risk. Memory is never so vivid as what holds in paint.
